Hawaii teachers have the opportunity to self-apply for many leadership programs targeted to help you develop into the kind of leader you would like to be. Leadership programs across the state have come together to provide this website as the hub for leadership opportunities.

Na Kumu Alaka'i - Teacher Leader Academy

  • Available to tenured Hawaii Department of Education teachers

  • Self-apply, one year program, 3 PD credits or stipend

  • Managed by the Hawaii Department of Education

  • Available to Department of Education teachers

  • Self-apply, Year-long program, Stipend upon completion, Capstone project

  • Managed by Hawaii State Teachers Association and National Education Association 

Hawai'i State Teacher Fellowship Program - Hope Street Group

  • Available to public school teachers (DOE and Charter) 

  • Self-apply in the spring, one year program (with opportunity to stay for second year), fellowship, stipend

  • Managed by Hope Street Group (non-profit) 

  • Available to Department of Education teachers

  • Add a teacher leader endorsement to your license

National Board Certification

  • Available to public and private employees

  • One year certification process in your field area, possible stipend depending on employment organization.

  • Managed privately but support resources are through Hawaii State Teachers Association and Kamehameha Schools. 

New Teacher Center

Teacher Center's mission is to improve student learning by accelerating the effectiveness of new teachers.

  • Teacher induction, instructional coaching, school leadership, school improvement, policy

Teach For America

  • Available to pre-service graduates and acts as support to teacher leaders with a social justice orientation to education.

  • Self-Apply, minimum 2 years, salary provided by Department of Education 

  • Managed by non-profit agency 

Hawaii State Teacher Association

  • Support network for teacher leader initiatives including professional development leadership courses through PDE3, National Board Certification, Teacher Leader Initiative, Teacher Leader Network

Induction and Mentoring

  • New teachers

  • Selected by administrators, two-year program, mentoring program

  • Managed by the Department of Education

Kamehameha Schools

  • Available as a support to Kamehameha Schools teachers and acts as a support to Department of Education teachers

  • Support programs vary

Department of curriculum studies - UH Manoa

  • Teacher Leader Certificate, Add a Field, and MED concentration courses
